NUJ Local Government Information Chapel, Osun State

History of The Nigeria Union of Journalists, Local Government Information Chapel, Osun State Council

The history of Osun NUJ, Local Government lnformation Chapel dates back to the creation of Osun State from the old Oyo State in August, 1991.

During this period, the likes of Dosu Fasina, Lanre Fadahunsi, Lawrence Omolere, Muriola Awoseemo, Adedapo  Omotosho, Wale Ayinde, Adebisi Popoola, Adedapo Adesina, Dele Ayanboye, Diipo Kuponiyi and a host of others, who were lnformation Officers in the old Oyo State Local Government Service moved to the newly created Osun State.

They fraternized with their colleagues in the journalism profession and eventually Dosu Fasina became an Ex-Officio member of the first Executive Committee of Osun State Council of NUJ led by Comrade Lekan Awoyemi.

However, the discriminatory practices that crept into the Union activities made this set of people shovelled themselves out of Osun NUJ.This voluntary disengagement continued until 2012 when the administration of Alhaji lsmaila Ayodele and Pastor Tunde Oguntomi, former State Council Chairman and Secretary respectively, represented the case of Local Government Information Officers in Osun to the National Executive Council (NEC) of the Union in Abuja.

After deliberations, it was approved at a NEC meeting in November, 2012 that State Councils should inaugurate Local Government lnformation Chapel in their States. Thus, on 18th December, 2012, Osun NUJ, Local Government lnformation Chapel was inaugurated with Lanre Fadahunsi as the pioneer Chairman.

However, Comrade Lanre Fadahunsi retired from the state service six months after the Chapel's inauguration. A bye-election was conducted between Aderinwale Adegboyega and Muriola Awoseemo and Aderinwale Adegboyega won the election.

Information Officers in the Local Governments are eminently qualified as professional mass communicators having received qualitative training like their counterparts in the print and electronic media. And to enable grassroots journalists have a medium of their own, the regime of Aderinwale Adegboyega came up with the publication of THE BELL Magazine in December 2016.

This news magazine was to be a monthly publication but financial constraints stopped the publication.

Today, the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Local Government information Chapel has become an epitome of other chapels in the state due to love, cooperation and unity of purpose among members, which serves as the hallmark of our chapel's successes.

The opening of a website for the Chapel by the current administration of Comrade (Dr.) Adedapo Owolabi should be seen as desirable and timely in tandem with modern technology and globalization of the Chapel's activities.
